Tripadvisor 2008

Jun 27, 2007 - The location of the Bergland is a nice compromise. It is closer to the train station than most hotels downtown. It is in a quiet neighborhood. It is 5-10 minutes walk to either the old town or the Mirabell Gardens. It is quite close to several restaurants on Linzer Gasse or in its own pleasant neighborhood.
We had a nice room, a good breakfast and a very helpful staff. They have a computer terminal for a reasonable fee. The computer and the staff were most helpful when we needed to change a reservation at a following location.
I am sure we would stay there if returning to Salzburg.
Sept. 16, 2007 - This small owner managed hotel was conveniently located about a 10 minute walk from the old town. We extended our stay from one to two nights because there is so much to see in Salzburg. The rooms are all different so have character. The breakfast was ample and fresh. The owner, Peter was extremely helpful to us and to other guests. Free parking is another benefit. We would stay there again.

...very good option in the mid-range price category. The light, airy rooms in this friendly, stylish hotel/pension are decorated with traditional Austrian furnishings given a modern twist. The owner painted most of the pictures that hang on the walls. Bikes are available for hire at € 6.- per day. It is about 10 minutes walk east of the city centre.

Cozy, personalized, and substantial, this guesthouse sits within a quiet residential neighborhood. It was bought by the grandfather of the present owner in 1912, rebuilt after its destruction during World War II. Today it welcomes visitors in a "music room" where there's a beer, wine, and coffee bar and a collection of guitars and lutes displayed on the walls. There's an on-site computer with an Internet connection so guests can check their e-mail, a green Kachelofen (tiled stove), and a decor that might remind you of a ski lodge high in the Alps. Rooms are comfortable, nonsmoking, and modern-looking, with larger-than-expected bathrooms containing tub/shower combinations and, in many cases, a piece of furniture hand-made by members of the Kuhn family, your hosts. The pension will rent you a bike and dispense information about where to ride.

Salzburg, Austria: The perfect break
Forget Mozart and the von Trapps - this summer the Alpine town of Salzburg co-hosts Euro 2008. Take a look before the football fans arrive, says Alexandra Ferguson.

High culture: the Hohensalzburg Fortress rises above the city
Why go?
Perhaps it is all those Christmas repeats of The Sound of Music, but Salzburg seems strangely familiar, even to a novice. The wooded slopes of the Mönchsberg – the mountain that forms a backdrop to the city – rise to meet snow-capped peaks, while far below Baroque churches and palaces follow the bend of the Salzach River.
Graceful fountains gild cobbled squares and locals of a certain age wear lederhosen and the frilly peasant dresses known as dirndl.
But before Rodgers and Hammerstein came Mozart, and no visit would be complete without a nod towards his legacy. Chamber groups perform his music every night, and his homes are open to the public. But it is not all Wolfgang and Maria — the city has other museums and some fine art galleries. And if you tire of the cultural attractions, there are always the coffee houses and beer gardens.
The recently refurbished Bergland Hotel (0043 662 872318, www.berglandhotel.at) — on a quiet residential street 15 minutes’ walk from the centre — is excellent value. Rooms are bright and spacious, and the colourful communal areas include a snug with a piano and small library. Doubles from £74.
Virtual Tourist, Oct. 2007
We had a large comfortable ensuite room overlooking the terrace garden/bar. During the time of our stay although the terrace was officially open in the evenings it rained every night so no guests used the outdoor bar. The owner Peter displays his artwork all around the hotel.
There is an Internet point in the bar. peter also keeps a small library of English books. peter is very helpful with local knowledge. The breakfast is buffet style and more than adequate for most people. Situated in a quiet street but only a short walk from the old city. There is an Italian restaurant and an Indian just down the road. There is also a brewery/beer garden very close, but it doesn't cause a problem with noise.
DK Eyewitness Travel Guides 2005
"This newly refurbished small hotel has been in the hands of the same family for three generations. It stands on the foot of Kapuzinerberg, in the centre of town. The facilities include bicycle hire, a library and an Internet corner. Rooms (all non-smoking) are comfortable and tastefully furnishes."
Lonely Planet Austria 2002
"The owner painted many of the pictures that hang in this friendly, family-run place. No smoking is allowed in the light, pristine rooms, which all have bathroom and cable TV. Bikes are available for hire at EUR 6.-- per day, and Internet access is EUR 1.50 for ten minutes. Though a little way east of the centre, it's still reasonably convenient."
Berkeley University Europe Guide 1995
"Eighteen completely charming rooms, buffet breakfast, TV, phone, and delightful owner who pours drinks in a cozy bar. Reservations advised."

Editors Choice : ... awaits this small-scale, sociable, three star hotel run by Peter Kuhn, who painted many of the colorful, stylized paintings that cover the walls. Rooms range from the rustic (Number 302) to the modern (most of the rest), though all have spotless, white-tiled bathrooms with shower and toilet. There's a lift, movement-sensing lights in corridors and a bar area with musical instruments and English books. Outside there's offstreet parking and a small Japanese-style pond. Herr Kuhn rents bikes (EUR 6.-- a day) and offers Internet access. Buses run to the old town from close by. Rates are constant through the year, so they're excellent value in high season. Or better yet, in the winter there may be a "pay two nights, stay three" offer; ask ahead about this.
Frommer's Europe on a Budget 2000
"This pleasant pension, owned by the Kuhn family for more than 80 years, is on three floors of a modern building on a residential street, about a 10-minute walk across the river from the Old City. It has a cozy bar/lounge with a piano and guitar, plus a small English library. Adorning the walls is original artwork by English-speaking Peter Kuhn. The rooms are spotless and cheerfully decorated with Scandinavian furniture; the bathrooms were recently remodeled. The rooms have cable TV with CNN. There are bicycles for rent
It's located about a 15-minute walk south of the Hauptbahnhof. Free parking."

FODORS Austria 9th edition (2001)

...it was such a delight to meet you and your family and to stay in your Pension. We enjoyed above all the good conversation (and of course the virtuoso rendition of Stars & Stripes on the piano.) We hope to return to stay again and if ever you would find yourself traveling here, do let us know. Thank you again for your hospitality and help with our medical problem. Best wishes....S.T.R.
.. hello from South Africa. Better late than never. I want to compliment you with your pension. It is so clean, neat and peaceful. I enjoyed my stay there very much. Each time I visited Austria I love the country and you people more. It was my third time now. I wish you well. A.M.
... Without question, our stay in Salzburg was a significant highlight. We so enjoyed our stay in your Pension.. with fine breakfasts and the unforgetable cool drink at the bar after walking in the heat all day. But the most exciting part was seeing your art and having the opportunity to share ideas and thoughts. Thank you for being such a friendly host. C&S.
...I just have to write and tell you that my experience at your hotel was totally delightful! I travelled with a lady friend of mine in April, 2003 and we worked with the agent at the train station to locate a place to stay for three nights. I believe we truly hit the jackpot when we walked up to the inviting entrance at your hotel. And the close proximity to "old town" was just perfect. We've both been to Salzburg previously but because of the sheer beauty of the place and the warmth of the people, it keeps us coming back for more and more. One of you told me the history of the building at breakfast time which I found fascinating! For any future trips to your fair city, we'll be sure to come back to Hotel Bergland. Best wishes, P.C. and D.K.
... I love your hotel. I love staying over night - 2 nights actually. I got scared when I opened the window because in Colorado the windows open sideway and yours opens well the top goes down. Its nice and comfy it makes me feel like home. Sincerly Emily S. - room 205. (8 years old). P.S. I love the beds - P.P.S. I like the coat hook. (March 2004).
Judy and I wanted to thank you for making our stay in Salzburg wonderful. You and your staff were so helpful it made a lot of things so much easier. Bergland Hotel is a real gem and we wish you continued success with it. We will certainly recommend it to all of our friends and if you want to use us as a reference at any time, please do so. If you and your wife find yourselves on the west coast of America, please let us know and stop in.
Best wishes, Bob and Judy - (May 2004)
... just a note of thanks for our visit to the Hotel Bergland in Salzburg a few weeks ago. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there due mainly to your very warm greetings, comfortable surroundings, and lovely rooms. Thank you for accommodating my mother and her companion at the last minute. Salzburg is an extraordinarily beautiful city, and our brief visit there was made even more pleasant by the time at the Hotel Bergland ...

Hi Peter,
Arrived back in the UK safe and sound. It is not often that we send thanks to places we have stayed but the Bergland is an exception! The level of service at the hotel plus the kindness and tour reccomendations you offered to Dawn and myself was well appreciated. Congratulations on having such a good and friendly business. Please extend our appreciation to all who work at the Bergland. My warmest regards
